The Year is 1952 and the location is a small island in the Mediterranean Sea, in Sicily. Exiled from his homeland (Chile) the poet Pablo Neruda finds hospitality from his travels and settles down on this little island where he meets Mario Ruoppolo. Mario, the son of a fisherman, has no intention whatsoever of following in his father’s footsteps. His only alternative would be to immigrate, but that is more of a dream than reality. His meeting with the poet Neruda will drastically alter his life.

11:00 AM Italian Culinary Travels

Lidia’s Italy: Savor It “Saor”! Let’s Cook with Lidia Bastianich and got to Trieste as we learn how to properly marinate sardines. Lidia then prepares mouth watering veal chops based on a recipe from Trieste.

Sicily: The Land and The Sea. From the province of Trapani and the city of Marsala, our culinary adventure includes authentic Marsala wine, an ancient salt works, exquisite olive oil and Italian coffee.

12:00 PM In the Footsteps of Verdi!

From humble beginnings, Giuseppe Verdi rose to become Italy’s greatest composer. His music revolutionized opera as we know it and his revolutionary politics helped bring about the unified Italy that we know today. In his lifetime, his name alone became a political rallying cry: Viva Verdi! Vittorio Emmanuele Rei d’Italia. The DVD takes us from La Scala in Milano to La Fenice in Venezia. Verdi’s 28 operas were met with varying degrees of success– from the triumph of Rigoletto to the failure of the premier of La Traviata. In the end, history has had the final say on the career of this true Italian hero.

1:00 PM Francesco’s Italy: Italy Top To Toe!

Francesco da Mosto, author and architect, takes us on a sweeping tour of the art, history and beauty of Italy. Francesco leaves Venice, his birthplace and home and heads to the romantic North in his Alfa Romeo Spider. We travel to the beautiful cities of Padova, Vicenza, Ferrara, Bologna, Mantova, Milano, Portofino and then visit Le Marche, Urbino, Florence, Lucca, Siena, and Assisi. Arriving in the heart of Italy we visit Rome, Tivoli and on to Naples. Finally we go to the South and visit Puglia, Basilicata, Reggio Calabria and Sicily in all of its splendor and it is here that Francesco’s journey becomes personal—his family lived here for over 500 years.

The Palio is the oldest horse race in the world and turns the Italian city of Siena into a high-stakes battleground of strategy, intrigue and simmering machismo. In the eye of the storm stand the jockeys, adored if they succeed, despised if they fail. Palio follows the legendary maestro Gigi Bruschelli, winner of 13 races and master of the intrigues that surround the Palio, and his former protégé Giovanni Atzeni, a handsome young Sardinian contender driven by a fearless passion to become number one. Less interested in bribes and collusion, he rides for love of the race. In Italian with English Subtitles

From the snow covered Alps in the north to the dreamy lagoon city of Venice and its palaces and its world famous “Carnevale”. From the romantic hill landscape of Toscana where the aromas once inspired Leonardo Da Vinci to Rome, the city that during antiquity was the center of the Roman Empire and then to Sicily in the South, an island of gods and natural forces. A journey through time in one of the most beautiful countries in the World.

7:30 PM In the Footsteps of Puccini! “Vissi d’arte vissi d’amore; I lived for art, I lived for love.”

Giacomo Puccini wrote these lines for the heroine of his most celebrated work, Tosca. But they equally apply to the composer himself. An unrelenting bonvivant, Puccini has been called the last great poet of Italian opera, creating some of the most memorable music ever written. Through his letters, manuscripts and previously unseen family films, Puccini comes to life revealing all of his successes and his setbacks. From childhood religious processions in Lucca to the great opera houses of Europe, we follow in the great composer’s footsteps.

11:00 PM Caput Mundi Venice. Stupenda Venezia!

A feature length in depth exploration of Venice: part history, part walking tour and part travel essay. All of this is accompanied by beautiful music. This will be a joy to view by those who are completely unfamiliar with Venice and those who have been there many times before.

12:30 PM Discover Sicily. La Sicilia da Scoprire.

Sicily features an interesting mixture of visitor attractions, from marvelous beaches and remote nature reservations to astonishing ancient cultural landmarks. Our trip through Sicily starts in Messina and leads southwards to Taormina, the gorge of Alcantara and further on to Siracusa, then to the Cape of Passero. Travelling back up from the South, our journey takes us northwards to Modica, Agrigento, and Selunite. Finally, the trip leads us into the inner parts of Sicily: to Enna, Villa Casale, Piazza Armerina and a short trip to the Madonie nature reserve ending at the volcano of Mt. Etna.

2:00 PM Fascinating Tuscany

Tuscany was named after the Etruskans, who were called ‘Tusci’ by the Romans. The kingdom was eventually divided into independent dukedoms and from 1531 the Medici, a family of businessmen and bankers, ruled. The capital of Tuscany is Florence, a city of art and joie de vivre and the home of important artists such as Donatello, Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, plus the writers Dante and Boccaccio and the scientist Galileo Galilei. You will visit other beautiful cities such as Lucca, Pisa, and Siena.

2:30 PM Italian Style: The Ferrari and The Alfa Romeo.

Italy’s passion for racing in the early 20th century became a cultural obsession. It also provided the catalyst for two of the most legendary automobile manufacturers in history: Ferrari and Alfa Romeo. From their common beginnings in the 1920s, Enzo Ferrari and Nicola Romeo would each create a legacy trademarked through some of the fastest and most beautiful cars ever to grace the highway. These two automotive empires brought a new kind of swagger and style to the world of race cars.
