THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11
5:00 PM Festival Opens
7:00 PM Film – Opera Speaks Italian: Puccini for Opera Lovers! Besides learning about the man behind the music, we also get to hear, through actual performances, beautiful extracts from his musical operas. Throughout this documentary are brief comments made by opera producers, conductors, opera singers, and his granddaughter Simonetta Puccini. Extracts from his operas are sung by José Cura, Leontina Vaduva and Julia Migenes. If you want to quickly become acquainted with Puccini’s magnificent operas and his music, then this is the DVD to see.
8:00 PM Film – Touring Italy: An Introduction to La Bella Italia! This DVD explores the land of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Galileo, Verdi and Caruso. Then we go on to a tour of Milano and the Italian Riviera, a sampling of the culinary delights of Bologna and a discovery of the ruins of Pompeii, the Renaissance city of Florence and the canals of Venice. In the eternal city of Rome, you will explore the remnants of an ancient empire amid the bustle of a modern metropolis. Some other stops in this introduction to Italy include Naples, Capri, Genoa , Verona and Sicily.

11:00 AM Film – Opera Speaks Italian: Puccini for Opera Lovers! 12:30 PM Children’s Italian Culture Class: Passport Italy
Join Rice University students in a journey throughout Italy. Participants will be exposed to Italian Language and Culture through diverse activities representative of major Italy cities. After passing through dogana (customs) and receiving a passport, students will experience some of Italy’s treasured cities: Venice, Florence, Rome, Naples, and Palermo. NOTE: This event will be held on the Taste of Italy Pavilion Stage
3:00 PM Film – Brava Italia: The Eternal Country! This film showcases Italia Oggi with a cultural insight to Modern Italy. From Italy’s autostradas to its cutting edge technology to its dolce vita, we will visit Italy and its regions from Val d’Aosta to Sicily and Sardegna.
4:00 PM Italian Language Class: An Introduction to Speaking Italian

It includes visits to Palermo, Piana degli Albanesi in Sicily, Procida in the Aeolian Islands, Naples, Matera in Basilicata, Gubbio, Spoleto, Siena, and the eternal city Roma. The film closes with a musical tour of Rome and a Montage of Venice.
